Im the same as Samantha_Nellie_Felicity. This goes for all my newer dolls except the ones that I had when I was younger and played with. Those of course have been fixed up but are not in brand new condition. All my furniture is on display. Their bedrooms are on display in my sig.
The dolls in our house get their hair styled and changed every couple of weeks. Samantha's hair is a little fuzzy because she is the oldest doll we have - about 6 years old. Kailey still has her original braids, but she still gets ponytails and half up half down styles. We just didn't want to mess up her braids.
Right now there are seven 18" dolls in our household, so when one of them changes clothes, they usually all get changed. For example, they all go into PJs at the same time. My DD puts historical clothes on the today girls and vice versus. No one is strictly one character. I probably would stick more true to character, but she is more creative than I am. I display my dolls in a curio cabinet with their accessories. I get them down on a regular basis to change their clothes to match the season and brush any hair that has become messy (Only on Samantha and Felicity since they have straight hair). I keep the original hair styles and keep the dolls with their proper historical clothes. (I tend to be very particular with my dolls.) On Christmas Eve I put them in their nightgowns and on Christmas Day I change them to their Christmas dresses and add their own dolls.
I love knowing others give their dolls makeovers and enjoy playing with them every day, but that just isn't me. It doesn't mean I love my dolls less, I just love them differently!

Kirsten is 16 years old and still has her original braids- but not the original loops, or even the original ties because they deterorated and fell off.
Felicity is 15 years old and her hair has been taken down and is a bit messy. I'm scared to brush it though because one of the wig cap strings broke on her, and although the hair is still attached by the other string on that row, I'm scared brushing it will pull it out. It just gets smoothed down. Over the years, she is missing one pin curl.
Addy is 13 years old and her hair has been styled and restyled but mainly into the original style, I just like rebraiding it. It is quite matted.
The other dolls mostly have their original styles, except Marisol. I keep all braids that girls come in- the others get restyled, but I rarely take out ties (example, Sam stays half up, Kit keeps the mini pony tail- but I style around them) Jess's hair is the only I would still call perfect. My dolls like to shelf dive and have all gone through several moves.
As for clothes- they get changed. No doll is expected to wear the same clothes for more than a season.
American Girl was a line of dolls designed to be played with, and I think it is important to do just that. As an adult, I clearly don't play as much, but as a child Kirsten, felicity, and Addy went on adventures with me. I knew if something happened I could send them to the hospital to become good as new. (Of course now the PM thing makes this harder, and Kirsten is getting silver eye that will go unfixed)
I am still very glad my dolls had the opportunity to be played with. The song Jessie sings in Toy Story made me cry when I was in high school (how embarassing) because I realized although they were on a shelf and not under the bed, and new ones were still being added, my dolls were being very neglected.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Mine are very much play dolls. Addy changes clothes every day, gets ready for bed every night, sleeps in my arms, and gets new outfits anytime I'm inspired and have fabric to spare.Quote:

I keep mine in perfect condition, on a shelf or with their furniture. Example- Felicity's hair hasn't been taken out of it's ribbon ever. (almost 4 years old)
But that doesnt mean I dont love them, I really love them, I just want them to look nice.
The new girl (who will get her name when she gets her hair) gets huggles, outfits designed for her, and sleeps on the couch under her own blanket.
I do the same with my ponies--once every few months I just get them down and play! It's the best.
My dolls are all "played" with occasionally, and have their hair styled and their clothes changed at random times. They usually sit on my bed, or sometimes I will manage to set up a small display for them. I almost always take out the doll's original hair style on the same day that I get them. My dollies are well-loved and well cared for .
Depends on the doll. My AGOT, LE's, PM Sam and Nellie are definately "play" (mess around with hair, change clothes, ect)
However, Molly, Kirsten and Felicity are more just change dolls-I change their clothes, but I won't undue their original hair styles. Mostly because I'm not really good with hair-and can't seem to see the perfect hairstyle ruined.
Especially Kirsten and Molly-those braids are perfect.

I still cry when I watch TS2, and this scene comes up, or just listening to the song.
Me too! I remember seeing it with hubby (well boyfriend then-and he started laughing when I was crying.) But that song makes me tear up all the time!
